Video Games

All My Monies Are Belong to Nintendo and Sony

Honestly, I’ve been playing video games in some capacity for as long as I can remember. One of my most vivid memories of my video game indoctrination was one night when I was probably 6 or 7. We went to my Aunt’s house for dinner, and my cousins got the new SNES. I remember playing F-Zero for hours, played through dinner, and much to my delight nobody bothered me — just me and the futuristic road.

The game’s atmosphere captivated me. The music, the colors, the new controller (shoulder buttons!? what a novelty!!) — all of this shaped my world for the rest of my life. It was riveting, and gave me such a rush. And it was a world that was all my own, and nobody else’s. Even as a wee lad, I told everybody to get off my lawn.

In the years immediately afterwards, I remember enjoying time with my cousins as they played new games. I thoroughly enjoyed watching them play RPGs, especially 7th Saga. Once I started working for $5.15/hour, I spent nearly every dime on the original PlayStation, and its various RPGs. Hell, one of the first questions my beautiful bride-to-be asked me was, “Who’s your go-to in Mario Kart?” (it’s Yoshi. Also, I’d like everyone to know that this question came after another home run, “What’s your favorite cheese?”). Now that I’m thinking about it, I should really thank my cousins for showing me something so wonderful.

My 2021 Video Game Resolutions

For my ye’ olde 2021 resolution, I want to complete 4 (four) video games. “But Steve, you just said you love video games more than life itself – only 4 (four)?” Good question! Yeah, only 4 (four) because I’m now a mostly functioning adult and I have other responsibilities and other 2021 resolutions to go after.

  1. Final Fantasy XII Zodiac Age for the PS4
    • Current status: I technically started this in 2020, but who cares! I’m 50-something ours in, and I’m trapped in a side quest I started too early and the enemies keep on killing me. This may not end so well.
  2. Horizon Dawn Zero for the PS4
    • Current status: I own it, lost the disc for almost two (2) years, recently found it, and have yet to start
  3. Final Fantasy XVI for the PS5 [whenever it comes out]
    • Current status: need a PS5, and for the game to come out
  4. Cyberpunk 2077 for the PS5, because the PS4 version was an absolute horror show
    • Current status: need a PS5
  5. Hogwart’s Legacy for the PS5
    • This is a bonus game! I plan on picking this up once I get a PS5 and the game releases, and I plan to play the shit out of this game with my beautiful bride-to-be
